Wharton Goldsmiths jewellery expert Sam Wharton is always being asked by his clients about how they can find out their girlfriends engagement ring size without her knowing.
Before we reveal our tricks of the trade, it’s important to remember these 2 interesting ring sizing facts:
Our dominant hands can be slightly bigger (so make sure you are measuring for her left)
Wider rings have a tighter fit than thinner bands, so if you borrow a ring for us to measure, make sure that it is the same width as the ring you are thinking of buying.
With these things in mind here are 5 tricks we’ve tried and tested over the years which will ensure your proposal will remain the surprise you planned.
1. IT TAKES A TEAM, ENLIST A GOOD FRIEND
A great way to find out her ring size is to ask one of her friends for help. Friends tend to have this valuable insight as they have probably been talking about when it’s going to happen, tried on rings and discussed at length the exact style they would like! But if her friend doesn’t know off the cuff, she can be the one to do the digging. Perhaps they could go engagement ring shopping “for fun.” She could get professionally sized and her friend could report back to you. Choose a friend that isn’t going to buckle under questioning and has a talent for acting. Or, if one of your partner’s friends is already engaged, ask her friend to let your girlfriend try on the ring. This will give you an idea of the size range.
2. SOMETHING BORROWED
Be careful with this method because it might backfire on you if you are a little careless and your plans will be ruined! Make sure that you choose a ring that she wears on a similarly sized finger, the ring finger of her right hand is the best choice, but even if you bring in a thumb ring the size of the ring finger can be approximated. If you go down this route make sure that you choose a ring that isn’t overly important to her that she won’t notice missing while you have it..
3. LEAVE A TRACE
If the thought of taking one of her rings and potentially losing it feels you with dread; when she isn’t looking, quickly take one of her rings and place it on a piece of paper. Draw a circle on the inside and outside of the ring. To ensure it’s consistent do this a few times and from this we should be able to determine the diameter of the ring from your sketch. Remember to hide the paper though or she’ll wonder what your doodles mean!
4. COMPARE FINGERS
This method is a little more difficult, but in times of desperation, it could be the winning formula. When you are holding her hand, see if one of her fingers is similar in size to a finger of yours. For example, her ring finger might the same size as your little finger. This method is not the accurate, but the more information we have on her ring size the better.
5. PUT A STRING ON IT
If she’s not a deep sleeper this may not be the best option, but when she’s sleeping, if you can, take her hand and gently wrap a piece of string or cotton around her finger to find the right size. Many men use this approach and it’s the best way if you can’t find anyone who knows her ring size, don’t feel confident enlisting help or going undercover.
