Diamonds and precious stones were the main theme running thorugh the full colour catalogue produced for Christopher Wharton & Sons, a Hertfordshire jeweller who names Tiffany’s and Cartier as its competitors. The firm’s jewellery is designed by Christopher Wharton himself.

Quadrant produced the high quality catalogue and did such a good job that Christopher Wharton’s marketing manager wrote an article for Print Media Magazine.

An extract reads: “For the first time, Wharton’s decided to use Quadrant’s Kodak InSite web-based portal and its PDF-based workflow, Kodak Prinergy, to handle the artworking process. Uploading files into this system reduced turnaround time of photos from approximately four days to just four hours. Previously files were transported using CDs, DVDs and special delivery. InSite also provided Wharton’s with a comlete audit trail and allowed files for the brochure or website to be worked on simultaneously.

“Once files were uploaded into InSite, they were available online to check layout and text along with an annotation facility to advise of any corrections needed to the core files.

“However, online proofing was not used for colour management as we were wary of trusting the screen for accurate colour. Instead hard-copy proofs were used, along with a press pass to ensure colour accuracy.

“Colour was an issue throughout the project, as the more colours appearing in the pictures of diamonds, the lower quality they appear to be. The brochure was produced to the ISO 1267-2 standard.

“Work has already begun on the 2007/8 brochure, with the first 50 copies out of the 50,000 print run produced on Quadrant’s newly-installed HP Indigo 5500 digital press. This was to ensure that the new version was ready for the International Jewellery London event as well as being showcased at the Emmy 2007 awards.”

“Our products are made from the highest standards, so our brochure needs to have the same qualities to create an inspirational image for the reader.”
